Success for Victoria College’s Donut Delights and Grow Your Own Grub in this year’s Channel Islands Student Business Challenge

Jersey 25th May 2018

Donut Delights from Victoria College in Jersey have won the Overall Award in this year’s Channel Islands Student Business Challenge in recognition of their highly successful sweet and savoury donut business.  Additionally, Grow Your Own Grub from Victoria College have won the Overall Community award for their environmentally friendly bags of veggie plants.

The Channel Islands Student Business Challenge Awards ceremony was held on Thursday 24 May at the Hotel de France.  Additional awards were given to teams who excelled at marketing as well as to the teams that generated the most profit.

The Channel Islands Student Business Challenge involved teams of students working with mentors from corporate partners at Barclays, EY, Ogier and Sure to create and run a business over a ten-week period.  Each team was given a loan of £100 to start their business.  Forty teams from Grainville, Haute Vallee, Jersey College for Girls and Victoria College took part in this year’s Challenge together with a further thirty teams from Guernsey Grammar, La Mare de Carteret and St Sampson’s in Guernsey.

The seventy teams from Jersey and Guernsey collectively generated revenues of nearly £40,000 and have donated £8,500 of their profits to charities including local charities such as the Autism Jersey, Mind Guernsey, GSPCA, JSPCA, Cheshire Homes, Les Bourgs and Jersey Hospice.

Paul Savery, Managing Director for Barclays, Channel Islands said “There are so many benefits for the students taking part and it was great to see Barclays employees mentoring student teams again this year.  We look forward to supporting the Challenge as sponsors in 2019.”

Kirsty Mackay, Associate Partner from EY added “The judges were enormously impressed with the hard work and entrepreneurial spirits of the winners.  The participating teams have all shown great determination and generated an impressive amount of money in a short space of time. We think they have had some fun along the way too!”

Alun Watkins, Headteacher at Victoria College said, “We are so proud of our students who have created innovative and successful businesses in a very short space of time.  They have learned a huge amount and we have seen how much the Challenge has helped them improve their communication skills, organisation and their teamwork.”

The Challenge will take place again from January to March 2019 and all secondary schools have been invited to take part.
